Roy's father, a forest ranger, died saving members of a Navajo reservation during a major fire. The shaman, Brave Bow, raised young Roy Jr. as thanks. As Roy showed skill in archery and an interest in the hero Green Arrow, Brave Bow took him to a contest. Although Roy did not win, he impressed Ollie. Roy also helped stop a robber thanks to quickly drawing and firing. Queen agreed to take Roy in as his ward.

As Speedy, Roy assisted his mentor and became a member of the Teen Titans. He had a serious relationship with Donna Troy, and through his time with the titans met his best friend Dick Grayson.

After that relationship ended and the Titans had disbanded, Roy felt miserable. He also resented the fact that Ollie was spending most of his time with Black Canary and Hal Jordan. Roy developed a heroin addiction. When his addiction was discovered, Ollie punched him and kicked him out on to the streets. He was later found by Hal Jordan -- THE Green Lantern and Ollie's best friend -- and with the help of Black Canary and some of his friends helped him quit cold turkey. He wanted to do this to prove a point to Green Arrow. When he recovered, there was a rift between Roy and his former mentor, one which took a while to patch up. He worked for quite a while as a counselor for teens with drug problems after that.

He later became Arsenal and continued to work with the Titans as well as the CBI intelligence group. He was hired to take down the assassin Cheshire, but while undercover the two became romantically involved.

After the Titans disbanded, following the death of his one time love Donna Troy, Roy formed a new Outsiders team in New York, accepting an offer from Optitron Industries. The idea was a team that was a business, not a family like the titans had been -- all in all, the outsides have undergone much strife -- particularly under the leadership of an emotionally closed off Nightwing.

Roy is a notorious ladies' man. He has a daughter, Lian, from his affair with Cheshire, who means the world to him. Currently, he and Grace have a 'no-strings attached' relationship.

Roy plays in the band "Green Frog."

Roy was temporarily inactive from having his throat slashed by [[Drakon].

Roy has recently been invited to join the JLA with Black Canary and Hal Jordan.
